Soft gelatin capsules have potential for the development of modified release therapeutic systems. Soft gelatin capsules (SGCs) can deliver encapsulated drug substances that are in a liquid or semi-solid state. The encapsulated liquid can be hydrophilic or lipophilic. Various active substances with low solubility, macromolecules and substances unstable at gastric pH can be dispersed. The aspect of stability is also supported by SGC due to protection against oxygen, light, hydrolysis and moisture. The manufacturing process of soft gelatin capsules consists of preparation of gelatin layers, preparation of active substances for filling, encapsulation and drying process. The modified release of the soft gelatin capsules can be achieved by changing one or more parameters, such as: changing the dispersed particles and the dispersing agent in the matrix filler, the cross-linking of the gelatin constituent material and the coating process.
