The aim of the study was to detect the antimicrobial susceptibility of oropharyngeal strains of black-pigmented Prevotella isolated from a series of dental students from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" - Bucharest. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on a collection of black-pigmented Prevotella strains isolated from healthy dental students. Susceptibility testing against: benzylpenicillin (PG), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (XL), clindamycin (CM), metronidazole (MZ) and tigecycline (TGC) was performed by E-test. Results were interpreted according to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing, version 8.0 from 2018, except for TGC, when the United States Food and Drug Administration recommendation was followed. The following ranges of minimum inhibitory concentrations were obtained: 0.023 - 16 mg/L for PG, 0.016 - 0.75 mg/L for XL, 0.016 - 96 mg/L for CM, 0.016 - 0.19 mg/L for MZ and ˂ 0.016 - 0.19 mg/L for TGC. All isolates were susceptible to XL, MZ and TGC, while 50 isolates were resistant to PG and one strain was also resistant to CM. Results showed that about three quarters of the isolates were resistant to PG. The high frequency of beta-lactamase producers among the resident flora of the oral cavity and oropharynx should not be neglected whenever beta-lactam antibiotics are intended to be used in oral infection therapy.
