The present study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of somatostatin and thrombin combined with omeprazole for the treatment of 64 patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding. 128 patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding in our hospital between January 2015 and May 2017 were enrolled. Patients were randomly divided into two groups according to a random number table: observation group and control group (n = 64, each). The control group received omeprazole; the observation group received somatostatin and thrombin. The total effective rate of the observation group was 93.75%, significantly higher than that of the control group (78.12%, p < 0.05); the time for haemostasis and hospitalisation in the observation group were significantly shorter than in the control group (p < 0.05); the haemoglobin (HGB) after treatment in the observation group significantly increased when compared with the control group (p < 0.05); the adverse reaction rates in the observation group was 10.94%; the difference was not statistically significant when compared with the control group (7.81%, p > 0.05). Somatostatin and thrombin combined with omeprazole for treatment of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding has a significant therapeutic effect and less acute adverse reactions. It is a safe and effective treatment option, and it may be used in clinical practice.
