In dog and cat traumatic corneal ulcers are the most common. Corneal ulcers in such pets are locally treated, or surgery can be performed (third eyelid flap). In many corneal ulcers the eyeball enucleation is the unique option caused by complications. For six cases (three common breed dogs and three European breed cats) diagnosed with corneal ulcers, an experimental product obtained from bacterial cellulose was used for the first time. The experimental product was obtained from horticultural by- products through a bioprocess using the bacterial strain Acetobacter xylinum DSMZ-2004. The bacterial cellulose membrane (BCM) was applied on the surface of the cornea, similar to an anatomical bandage and after the performed third eyelid flap. The third eyelid flap sutures were kept for three weeks. The treatment was unique and no additional therapies were used. Following the study the healing of corneal ulcers was achieved with corneal scars, but with vision preservation.
