Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia and excess mobilization of fatty acids. The effect of the vanadium complex di-μ-hydroxobis( quercetinatooxovanadium(IV)) (HOBQOV) on blood glucose and serum lipid levels was studied on alloxan-induced diabetic rats, and compared to that of vanadyl sulphate and metformin as reference substances. The diabetic rats were treated with the vanadium complex (0.4 mmol/kg body weight/day) for a period of 15 days. The blood glucose level was monitored daily, whereas the blood lipid profile was evaluated at the end of the treatment period. The administration of the vanadium complex restored to near normal the increased levels of blood glucose and blood lipid concentration. The results are encouraging for the consideration of the studied oxovanadium complex as a promising anti-diabetic drug.
