Abstract:
Polysaccharides display several biological activities, such as antitumour, anti-oxidation, hypoglycaemic, antiviral and
immunity enhancing properties. The polysaccharide fraction from Phemeranthus confertiflorus was extracted, hydrolysed
and 8 monosaccharides were analysed and quantified by capillary electrophoresis. The polysaccharide fraction was further
assessed for cytotoxicity on normal and tumour cell lines. The results obtained can promote Phemeranthus as an eligible
plant with potential for human health, because of high monosaccharides content (predominant rhamnose) and promising
cytostatic effect of polysaccharide fraction.
