Abstract:
The metabolic syndrome is a complex combination of interrelated risk factors of metabolic origin that, when occurring together, increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Adipocytokines are bioactive mediators released from the adipose tissue
including adipocytes and other cells present at the level of fat tissues. These include several novel and highly active molecules released abundantly by adipocytes like leptin, resistin, adiponectin, as well as some more classical cytokines released possibly by inflammatory cells infiltrating fat, like tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6).
The most abundantly expressed cytokines within the adipose tissue are leptin and adiponectin [1, 3]..
