Abstract:

Flowering tops of St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) were studied, in order to obtain a selective extract, enriched in hypericin. Macroscopic exam, microscopic exam and a chemical exam (qualitative and quantitative) were performed for this raw vegetal material.
The following anatomic characteristics were identified: secretory glands with essential oil, secretory glands with hypericin; cluster-crystals of calcium oxalate; epidermis with necklace-shaped walls.
The raw material contains: flavones (1.024 – 1.043 g%, expressed as rutin), polyphenolcarboxilic acids (19.79 – 21.83 g%, expressed as caffeic acid), hypericins (0.408 – 0.428 g%, expressed as hypericin), carotenoids, tannin and polysaccharides (mucilages).
Also, a dry extract enriched in hypericins and a pharmaceutical product containing a powder of this vegetal drug were analysed by comparison to the raw material.
