Abstract:

The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro antioxidant activity of Basilici herba aqueous extract. For this purpose, several tests were used: superoxide and hydroxyl radicals scavenging assays as well as hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. The extract contained 11.5 ± 0.37% g gallic acid equivalents (GAE) and scavenged superoxide and hydroxyl radicals in a concentration-dependent manner. At a concentration of 5 mg/mL the extract rendered 98.73 ± 0.72% scavenging activity towards superoxide radicals and 57.15 ± 3.01% scavenging activity towards hydroxyl radicals. The antioxidant activity of the extract, mainly attributed to its polyphenolic content, justifies the wide use of basil in traditional medicine and points out other possible therapeutical uses in the so-called “free radical” diseases.
