Abstract:

The objectives of this study were to establish the microscopic characteristics of Forsythia viridissima L., golden bell (Oleaceae) to bring information about its chemical composition and to test its activity on plant cell division. The raw material was harvested from Romania (Arges County) in April (for flowers) and in May 2006 (for leaves).
Microscopically we identified the following specific anatomical elements: trichomes and glandular hairs, chromoplasts in petal epidermic cells. The chemical determinations showed the presence of flavonoids (0.318 ± 0.102% in flowers, 0.168 ± 0.095% in leaves; expressed as rutin), total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (3.481 ± 0.446% in flowers, 5.825 ± 0.674% in leaves; expressed as chlorogenic acid), iridoides, triterpenes, coumarins, tannins, sterols, carotenoids, monosaccharides, polysaccharides and non-alkaloid nitrogen containing compounds.
Triticum bioassay showed a total mitoinhibitory activity for the 3.0% aqueous extract of Forsythiae viridissimae flos..
