Abstract:
Oxidative stress can be considered an imbalance between generation of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defense system. Also, oxidative stress is correlated with a series of cardiovascular diseases: arterial hypertension, ischemic cardiopathy, atherosclerosis, stable and instable angina. We investigated variations of oxidative stress parameters in correlation with modifications of triglycerides, seric cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in arterial hypertension untreated and treated with Sortis® (atorvastatin) and captopril.
Our research showed significant decreases of triglycerides values, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and increase of HDL-cholesterol values in patients treated with atorvastatin and captopril, compared with patients from the untreated group. We also established that average values of reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities increased in patients treated with atorvastatin and captopril, in the same time registering lower values of malondialdehyde (MDA).
In conclusion, association of atorvastatin and captopril in arterial hypertension treatment improved lipidic profile by increasing HDL-cholesterol values and decreasing the other determined parameters. The antioxidant activity of atorvastatin and captopril normalized the activity of the enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and the levels of reduced glutathione and malondialdehyde.
