Abstract:
Very rich in organic compounds having antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties, sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) still offers many opportunities for interesting studies.
Using physicochemical methods (e.g. spectrometry, gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography) and biochemical standardized assays, comparative determination of the content of antioxidant free radical scavenger compounds, and antioxidant activity in sea buckthorn leaves, fruits, juice, oil and extraction oil residues were performed. The analyses carried out have highlighted a rich content of antioxidants: polyphenol-, flavone-, and carotene-derivatives, polyunsaturated fatty acids and “SOD (superoxide-dismutase)-like enzymes” which agrees well with the antioxidant activity levels.
