Abstract:

In all marine ecosystems, macroalgae are both ecologically and biological important. They provide nutrition, reproduction place and accommodating for many living organisms, and they are also important for humans as they provide proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and in addition, they are used in medicine and pharmacology for their antitumoral, antimicrobial, antiviral and anticoagulant properties.
In our country, macroalgae are not cultured, practically, macroalgal industry is not developed. The aim of this research was to determine the biomass of red algae from genus Ceramium, in order to evaluate if it could be a potential source of agar. Studies show that it produces a good quality agar, compared with Gracillaria. This is the main source of agar nowadays, but the agar is of low quality, because it has high sulfate content.
