Abstract:
The aim of our study is to examine the airway deposition pattern of inhaled aerosol particles in different conditions using a stochastic model, and to investigate the possibility of using aerosols with different particle characteristics to improve the efficiency of aerosol therapy. Simulations were carried out for particles with diameters in the range of 1-10 µm, with normal and asthmatic lung parameters, and different breathing conditions. Our results show that airway obstruction during an asthma crisis increases the amount of aerosol particles deposited in the lungs, and increasing the length of inhalation and breath-hold times will have the same effect. In all conditions the highest deposition values were obtained with the 6 µm particles, which show that changing the characteristics of the inhaled particles will not improve the efficiency of aerosol therapy.
