Abstract:
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common micro-vascular complications of diabetes, remaining the leading cause of blindness among working-age individuals in developed countries. The progression of diabetic retinopathy occurs over years, its first stages lacking the clinical symptoms. So it would be beneficial to find biochemical markers that would allow an early diagnosis of endothelial dysfunction at the retinal level.
Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1) is involved in the inflammatory responses of the endothelium; elevated plasma concentration of the intercellular adhesion molecule-1 is associated with diabetes, age, smoking status, systolic blood pressure, positive family history of coronary disease. The ICAM1 level is also a parameter that illustrates with increased accuracy the clinical evolution of the retinopathy patients, correlating with the clinical diagnosis.
