Abstract:
Drug abuse represents a major public health in both rich and poor countries. The poly-drug addiction becomes, due to the dramatically increase of the number of drug consumers, a problem that complicates the detoxication treatment. Codeine-gluthetimide and methadone-alprazolam co-administration were reported to be the cause of many deaths in addicts, due to overdosage. While for the first association certain studies on animals were performed, for the last the data on animals are scarce. The study aims at investigating the haematological parameters of Wistar rats treated with codeine, gluthetimide, methadone and alprazolam, alone and in association. The results point out that the haematocrit value is a better parameter to observe anaemia than the haemoglobin value (mainly for codeine and methadone compared to their control). Also, for the same groups, a lymphopenia was observed, and respectively a greater granulocytes number percentage. Results are concordant to earlier studies that showed no major modification in the haematological parameters for the codeine-gluthetimide treated rats as compared to control.
